How could a pen and paper keep up with all the thoughts and feelings in my head? When I tried to write, I felt tears about to fall and I felt sick to my stomach. No words could ever explain all that comes with grief and trauma. But as time passed, words felt more and more accessible to describe what happened, and help me understand how I feel. It was so important for me to write this song, for so many reasons. It has helped me process and feel connected. I knew if I didn’t write this song, it would try to write itself in every other song, dance, or piece of art I create - it wanted to come out of me. And although it was hard, I stood patient with myself in trying to find the right words, and eventually I completed it.

Yes, a lot of performative art is for the audience - what looks best, what would read best, how the audience would follow a storyline, how can we make the audience relate, etc., but this song is truly for a select group of people. It is for myself, peers, and for our two dancing angels. Of course, if you can relate to it or find joy from it I am so thankful, but there is a major difference in intention. That’s something I had to keep in mind while writing and creating this song; not to be attentive to how the audience will feel it, but more so to how I feel it, and what feels right to me. Creating a song fully for your own healing and processing almost feels like a gift of self love. I cannot stress enough how much I needed to create this song.

Our two angels dance in the sky every evening to remind us that life is a beautiful, colorful, vibrant gift. The sunset will never just be a pretty view - it is our girls reminding us we’re not alone, and to shine like them, and grow with them.

I hope you all know how loved you are, and understand your importance to this world. Thank you for standing strong, and being brave enough to live through each day. It is truly a gift - never take it for granted.

Our Sunset music single launch!

Kira's new single, Our Sunset, is out now! In the chaos of rehearsals, performances, packing, and many other life tasks, “Film of Us” officially released! I am so thankful for the timing of this song’s release, as I feel it serves as a good kickoff to summer, and brings good vibes! The process behind this one was full of trial and error, which is surprising given it’s such a fun, sweet song. Here is the behind-the-scenes of the creation of my latest song!

I tried to look through my text messages to see when it REALLY all began but couldn’t quite figure it out… so here is an estimated timeline! Kevin originally created this mix with some vocals of the melody singing gibberish to hopefully develop some lyrics. In a studio session, I had talked about wanting to create an ‘Angel Baby’ by Troye Sivan type of song, and he played me his mix! I thought the energy and colors were what I was going for, so he sent it to me, and I started developing a story, and lyrics. I believe he had sent me the original mix around this time last year. After months of tweaking, writing, (and even co-writing… more on that later), and editing, we finally got into the studio to put down some vocals and finish the mix. The recording process went by relatively quickly, with a clear end goal in mind. This song has been on my radar for so long, and it feels so good to have it finished and out into the world! I hope it can bring some light and joy to your summer!

One big part of the creation process of “Film of Us” was the day Kevin and I co-wrote lyrics.

Long story short, I ended up crying.

When it comes to anything, I LOVE to have a schedule, working through things, trial and error, tweaking, etc. - and I love doing them on my own. I work so well by myself, and when it comes to creative endeavors I would 100 out of 10 times want to do it on my own. It’s not that I don’t trust or dislike other’s processes/work, I just know what I like, and I know how to get there. Given the Synesthesia aspect of my creative process, it gets hard to co-write a song that I want to be blue that has tints of suggested oranges or reds, and that gets confusing and difficult to communicate. I began to feel really overwhelmed by releasing control of making everything feel right, and tried to be open to what Kevin’s ‘right’ is. I think in the end, there’s maybe 2 or 3 lines we co-wrote in the final song, which doesn’t seem like a lot, but the experience behind it certainly was. Co-creating music is something I want to continue to grow in, because I know it has a lot to offer me… that day was just confusing and frustrating. High school has taught me so much, and I’ve grown immensely in the past 4 years.

High school looked different for me, as I was homeschooled by my mom from 3rd grade to around Sophomore year, and I completed my education on online school. With that, my graduation will look a little different too. It was set in my backyard, with beautifully set tables for all the guests who came to my ceremony. My Mom and my Aunt Lisa did a beautiful job in planning, and creating such a beautiful setting - there were color palettes, accent textures, flowers, lights, etc. I am so thankful for their love and passion in creating such a special day for me. (I helped too of course, but just in setting up the vision instead of creating it.) The ceremony consisted of me walking with my parents from my house to my backyard where the guests were seated, commencing the graduation process, moving my tassel, and the celebration began. After the ceremony, my friends began to arrive and there were laughs, dance battles, snacks, smiles, and photos late into the night. It meant so much to me to see everyone I loved in the same space, and by the end of the night my heart felt so full.

Graduating high school is such a privilege, and I feel so blessed to do so with a supportive family and many supportive friends. Looking back, there were moments where I thought going to a public high school would have made my experience ‘better’, as on social media I saw all I was ‘missing out’ on; parties, friend study groups, football games, assemblies, etc., but knowing what I know now, I wouldn’t have done high school any other way. I was allowed time with my family, time to dive into and learn about what I love, I learned how to manage and build my own schedule, I learned how much I love my own company, I learned how I learn. There were so many things I’ve come to understand that I wouldn’t have if I attended public high school. I am so thankful for my education, and the way my high school journey played out.

Graduation feels so, so bittersweet. It feels like it all went so fast, but I also feel like I am SO ready for what this upcoming year has to offer. I trust I am on the journey right for me, and I continue to explore it every day. I am so thankful for all the people who made my high school experience - I am forever in debt.

Thank you so much for reading this blog post! I am continuously grateful for all your love and support! Keep your eye out… exciting things are coming soon! I’m sending love to you all!

April 2023 favorites!

As we close on another month, I want to share some of my April ‘favorites’!

Favorite album: ‘Did You Know That There’s a Tunnel Under Ocean Blvd?’ by Lana Del Rey - as a big Lana Del Rey fan, I think this is one of my favorite Lana albums! I feel it’s the most raw, authentic, and real she’s gotten… Most times she writes in terms of a story or character, but songs from this album seem to be based on things that have happened in her personal life. The emotion is so powerful. I am so thankful for songwriters like her.

Favorite Lyric(s): (From ‘Fingertips’ by Lana del Rey)

To get to you, save you, if I take my life
Find your astral body, put it into my arms
Give you two seconds to cry
Take you home, I, I'll give you a blanket
Your spirit can sit and watch TV by my side

'Cause, baby, I
Ran through a time when I felt you were doing it

I couldn't handle it, I was in Monaco
I couldn't hear what they said on the telephone
I had to sing for the prince in two hours
Sat in the shower
Gave myself two seconds to cry

It's a shame that we die

These words feel like shimmering light through a window - so effortless and beautiful. Her words are so real and heavy. The theme of the cycle of life has been very prevalent in 2022/23 for me, and finding songs that communicate the words that I can’t feels like a relief. I highly suggest checking out her newest album - it’s a hard listen, but so powerful.

Jewelry: There’s something about finding pieces that feel like you. I recently bought 5 new rings, and I feel so lifted and ‘complete’ when I wear them. They feel almost like makeup - extending your natural traits and beauty. I bought my rings (and some other pieces) from a website called ‘Evry Jewels’ - they have great customer service, quality of items, and always run different discounts! I highly suggest checking them out! https://evryjewels.com/

New additions to bedtime ritual: After washing my face, brushing my teeth, and changing into PJs, I use an Essential Oil Mist from Bath & Body Works called ‘Lavender & Iris’ and spray it on my pillow and sheets before crawling in. After I’m in my bed, I turn on my heating blanket that lays on top of my regular blanket and enjoy the calming smells and warm bed. My bedtime routine is my favorite time of the day - I love winding down, and being able to have some time by yourself in a calm environment. Developing a ritual has helped my body know it’s time to go to sleep, and helps me feel more well rested. Sleep is so important!

Favorite song to sing: Whether i’m in my car, the shower, my room, or cooking, there’s a few songs I keep on rotation that I like to learn how to sing. My recent favorites I’ve been working on are ‘Cherry Blossom’ by Lana Del Rey, ‘Big Eyes’ by Matt Corby, ‘TV’ by Billie Eilish, and ‘Normal F*cking Rockwell’ by Lana Del Rey. Finding time to do what you love just for fun is so important in keeping an open relationship to it - it’s so fun singing just to sing. It feels freeing, and puts so much less stress on it being ‘successful’ or sounding ‘good’.

Those are a few of my ‘favorites’ from April! Be sure to stay tuned, exciting things are coming soon! Thank you all for your love and support always. I’m sending love and good energy!!!

Juggling high school, dance, music, mental health!

Hello everyone!

Today’s blog post will be centered around juggling high school, dance, music, and mental health.

There’s no doubt that teenagers have a lot going on, especially in recent years - it’s hard to find time to turn off while you’re surrounded by school, friends, family, relationships, jobs, social media and extracurriculars all the time. And while I don’t attend traditional school, I am definitely still a teenager.

I feel like the end of last year was when I finally understood how I can best balance everything going on in my life. I found that being organized, and letting go of things that no longer served or supported me helped me feel more prepared and present in my many roles. I’ve continued to practice gratitude and appreciation as well - for example, if I had a bad day then I come into the dance studio, I try to remember how thankful I am to be here, and how lucky I am to have such amazing teachers. Practicing gratitude has really helped me feel less overwhelmed, irritated, and frustrated in relation to my schedule. I’ve let go of a lot of social media (I only have Instagram now), and the whole mentality that comes with it - Snapchat and Tiktok culture I realized were very toxic for me, and even now at times I need to delete Instagram until I can check in with myself again. Social media took up a lot of my mental space that is now clear and open to work on other things that hold more value to me.

A couple morals of mine are everyone deserves to know they’re loved, and showing up 110%. I love being the person to help others feel heard, loved, and seen - I’ve found so much joy and beauty in being an unconditional friend. It’s hard at times, and it has taken practice not to take non-reciprocated conversations/moments/relationships to heart, but by practicing gratitude it helps me remember the importance in holding that space for others. By showing up 110%, It makes me feel more involved and committed to what I’m doing, and helps me learn even more about it. By really diving into whatever it may be; a favor, the dishes, a conversation, a dance piece, a lyric, I learn so much more about what it can offer me and teach me. I also believe that creating a strong work ethic will ultimately serve you more than relying on natural talent. That can be applied in friendships, relationships, jobs, or extracurriculars. Even if the hard work goes unseen by peers or mentors, I know it doesn’t matter because I see it, and it’s a standard I hold myself to. Being committed, kind, hard working, and present takes some work, but will never do you harm.

Because of all the opportunities in my life, and really working on who I am in relationship to them, it can get pretty tiring and draining. Finding things I like to do that open up conversation to myself have helped significantly in keeping my mental space clear - things like painting, cleaning, running, stretching, and watching movies. The relationship you have with yourself is the most important relationship you’ll ever have. Finding ways to work on that relationship and conversate with yourself will help you discover more about who you are.

Those are a few things I’ve practiced and am working on in order to live a balanced life. :) Like I said, being in high school / a young adult is hard by default, but I feel through these things I’ve been able to be more open for all life has to offer me. I hope you all are safe and healthy! I’m always sending love!!

Kira's solo dance for this season

Hello!

In my last blog post, I shared a bit about how dance conventions run, and in this one, I want to share a bit more about a part of it - my solo! My solo this season is self-choreographed, and has had many changes, versions, and edits done to it. I thought I could share the process behind choreographing a self-performed solo, and all the things that have happened to get it to where it is today!

The process began by selecting music. I had an idea of the style of dance I wanted to do (contemporary), so, I looked for songs that moved and inspired me. I had come across one that I really liked, and I even started choreographing to it - however, after the process continued for a bit, I no longer resonated with the song, and it didn’t feel quite right. The search for a song continued.

Many Youtube music rabbit holes later, I found the perfect song. It inspired me so much, and told a story I was moved by. I quickly got to choreographing.

(Here is the song! https://youtu.be/HNw6GYRZ040 - ‘Witching Hour’ by the Echo Collective)

Choreographing was fun, confusing, frustrating, and very educational. I learned a lot about how I create, and the mental preparation that goes into choreographing. As I had mentioned earlier, there were many, many versions of my solo - there are parts that have stayed the same since day 1, and others that are still being changed today. It’s nice to know because it’s mine, I can change it if something feels better, or makes more sense. I drew inspiration from many things for this solo - colors, memories, feelings, stories… It was so cool working with so many possibilities. As I was working, the title ‘Inflection Point’ came to me - In math/business, it refers to a point where significant change occurs. It felt very fitting for this piece’s intention and emotion, so I stuck with that as its title.

Once the choreography was finished I worked with one of my teachers, Elissa Edwards, weekly to clean it, edit some things, add some things, and go over intention and purpose. I’ve learned how important it can be to gain a second opinion, or even just have a second set of eyes working with you. It’s sometimes difficult for an artist to step back and look at their work objectively, so I’m grateful to have had someone to help me out in that sense.

The process of cleaning and refining continued, before and between competitions as well. I had performed my solo at a competition in January, and looking back at it compared to the most recent competition, it’s safe to say it was in its early stages of life. (Which is probably what i’ll say at the next competition too! It’s always growing and evolving…)

At the most recent competition/convention we went to, 24/Seven, I was so nervous to do my solo. There were so many incredibly talented artists there, and I was so scared to showcase my dance abilities, as well as choreography! I remember standing behind the wings, taking deep breaths, and completely forgetting how my solo started. I shook it out, and was reminded to trust myself - I've worked so hard on this solo, and I’m so happy with the way it has grown.

After I performed it, I felt solid. I feel like it was the best time I’ve ever done it. I was able to relax, until I remembered awards. And while awards are not the reason I dance, they’re always a little nerve wracking. As they announced the overall placements, I was getting so nervous. Eventually, my number was called for 3rd place, and I couldn't have been happier. I cried in my hotel room because I was just so proud of myself. Like I said, awards are not the reason I dance, and they really don’t mean much - but in times where you do get that recognition, it feels so good. That competition was hard. I walked out of it with a proud heart, and happy soul.

I hope that explained a bit about the process behind creating and performing a solo! I am so excited to do my solo again at the next (and last) competition/convention. The link above is my solo at 24/Seven - I hope you enjoy it!

Thank you for reading, and thank you for your love and support always! :)

Spring Dance Conventions

Happy Spring everyone!

As you may or may not know, a part of my dance world is attending dance conventions! In this blog post, I would love to share a look into that side of my life….

Dance conventions are a weekend (Fri-Sun) long event, filled with performance, auditions, and classes. A typical dance convention schedule will look something like this:

Friday:
(The titles Petite/Mini/Junior/Teen/Senior are divided up by age!)
•Starting at around 7/8am: Mini and Junior Solos/Duets/Trios Competition

•(Awards for Mini/Junior Solos)

•Petite/Mini/Junior Group Dances Competition

•(Awards for Petite/Mini/Junior Dances)

•Teen Solo/Duets/Trios Competition

•(Awards for Teen Solos/Duets/Trios)

•Senior Solo/Duets/Trios Competition

•Around 10-11pm: (Awards for Senior Solos/Duets/Trios)

Saturday:
•Starting at around 7/8am: convention classes - classes take place in big hotel/convention center ballrooms, with a stage/microphone/speakers where the teachers/assistants dance. About halfway in between classes there is an hour/or 45 min lunch break. Convention classrooms are also divided by age, using the same titles (Petite, Mini, Junior, Teen, Senior).

•Conventions classes end around 2/3pm, and the Teen/Senior group dance competition begins.

•Around 11pm-12am: (Awards for Teen/Senior group dances)

Sunday:
•Starting at around 7/8am: convention classes, and on Sunday is typically the Senior room audition.

•Here is the audition explained:

•What are we auditioning for? At Regional competitions, you are auditioning for eligibility to compete at that convention’s Nationals, as well as a full scholarship to next year's Regional convention.

•In Ballet class on Saturday, we learn a combo that is then used in addition to a combo we learn during a class on Sunday that we audition with.

•During convention classes and auditions, we have numbers on our clothes that are used to help out in the audition/class process.

•To begin, all numbers in the room are divided into groups, and will ‘go on the floor’ to perform the combo, then line up in a straight line as the teachers discuss and write down numbers they wish to see for a callback. This will continue until all groups have gone.

•After all groups have gone, there will be a callback to perform the Ballet combo we learned the day before. The same process of calling out a few groups/standing in a straight line will happen until all Ballet callbacks are finished.

•Then, there is one more round of callbacks where we perform the 1st audition combo again.

•Finally, they will call out numbers who receive the ‘convention audition finalist’ title. The winners of the audition scholarship will be announced at a closing show after convention classes are finished.

•Around 2pm: Convention classes finish, and the closing show begins. The closing show typically consists of scholarship winner announcements, guest performers, and studios performing a convention selected dance to showcase (meaning, the convention will select one dance that competed Saturday night to perform at the closing show again). Which means, we all need to get into hair, costume, and makeup again.

•The closing show finishes around 3pm-4pm, and that is the end of the dance convention weekend.

So… dance conventions are a lot. They are filled with so much - performance, nerves, learning, competing, very little sleep… but they are also filled with laughter, joy, memories, and community. Dance convention weekends go by so fast (yet so slow), and I always try to take it all in. The class of 2023 only has one Regional convention left… It’s crazy to think about!

Thank you so much for tuning into this part of my world - I have more dance related content coming soon, so be sure to keep watch! Dance conventions are a beautiful opportunity to grow, learn, and push yourself, and I strongly suggest going for it if you have any interest in doing so!

I hope you all have a lovely start to Spring! :)

The Process of Creating "Tonight"

Hello everyone!

To celebrate another song release, I wanted to share a bit about the process behind creating it!

This song was heavily inspired by images. I knew I wanted to create a song that felt like seeing through strobe lights, lights reflecting off of jewelry, blues, purples and pinks, and had the energy of an isolated connection with muffled sounds of a party. Writing an upbeat, sort of dance song like this is not in my nature, so it took a bit of time to finalize concepts, lyrics, and the title - it was a long process, but I'm so thankful for it as it led to the beautiful final version of ‘Tonight’ you all know! This song required many different things within the writing process - some songs need to be typed, others need to be journaled, but this song needed me to turn my room lights to blue and pink, and use a highlighter to highlight all lyrics I wanted to keep. I finished writing the song like this, and ended up with a page full of highlighted lyrics. I can’t really explain why it needed to be that way, perhaps it was the atmosphere or visuals in my room that matched the song.

Before the writing process was really finished, I had sent a version to my producer, Kevin McNoldy, and it sat in the cue for a bit waiting to be recorded. Within that time, that’s when I realized it really wasn’t finished, and I made some adjustments a couple weeks before recording. I’m grateful that there was time to let it sit, and I could come back to it objectively. After those final edits were made, we began working on it in the studio. Kevin created the incredible track based off of the chords, and some inspiration for what I wanted the song to sound like - as soon as he sent back the beat, I was freaking out. It was perfect, and exactly the feel I wanted for ‘Tonight’. From there, we recorded vocals and went through the track to make any edits or additions. Kevin and I really were on one brain wave during the creation of this song, as we bounced ideas back and forth that just worked - it felt like it all made sense, and was coming together perfectly.

And now, the song is completed, and out for you all to listen to! I hope it can bring some light and joy to your day, and I hope you love it as much as I do. In today’s post, I will be walking you through what a day in my life looks like! Of course, my schedule will vary based on the day, but here is a typical Monday, and I will explain some of the things I will prepare for the upcoming week!

When I wake up (around 7), the first thing I do is water my plants and give them a light mist. Then, after I get my coffee and light my candle, I'll sit down at my desk and start on some work. ‘Work’ means schoolwork first (I do online school), then I work through any music/dance work. Music work can range from writing a new blog post, figuring out a song artwork cover, writing up new concepts, listening to mixes, or figuring out scheduling. Dance work can mean scheduling, going over rehearsal schedules for the week, going over choreography for competitions or shows, choreographing combos, or sometimes choreographing pieces. As I come off of being creative with dance, I'll take a minute to let everything sit as I clean my room, wash my face, and make my bed. Once my favorite space to write is clean and clear (my room), I'll sit down on my bed and start working on the creative side of music. I’ll begin my creative process (which has its own blog post, if you want to check that out) and work through any other final touches to my music. Then I eat lunch and if i’m lucky watch an episode of RuPaul’s Drag Race with my little sister while we eat. After lunch, I’ll do activities based on the day such as cleaning my car, deep cleaning my room, laundry, reading, journaling, any extra work, or helping around the house before I get ready for dance. I dance Mon-Wed, then Fri-Sun. Mon-Wed are company classes, typically from about 6-9pm, then every other Friday I assist/sometimes teach combos and phrases for PrePro Apprentice (a program at CC&CO Dance Complex). On Fridays I also go to the music studio, from about 11am-1pm, where my producer (Kevin McNoldy) and I track vocals, work on mixes, and work on anything we need to while together. Saturday and Sunday are blocked off for almost full day dance rehearsals, with PrePro (a program at CC&CO Dance Complex) every Saturday from 11am-3pm(ish). After coming home from dance, I'll take a shower, wash my face, eat some dinner, and head to bed.

And that’s a day in my life, with a little bit of what my week looks like!... I hope it made sense! Being a graduating senior, my schoolwork load is much lighter this year which allows for more time to be creative and work on what I love to do. I’m so excited for next year when all I do is be creative! I’ll be sure to write an updated day in my life so you can see what my gap year looks like!

Thank you for reading!

February Favorites

As February comes to an end, I wanted to share some of my ‘favorites’ from this month! Ranging everywhere from choreographers to scents, here are some things I’ve been finding inspiration and joy from!

TV Show - Steven Universe: focused on a young boy living in ‘Beach City’ who is half human half ‘gem’, you follow his journey as he fights alongside the ‘Crystal Gems’ to protect the Earth from harm. This show does an amazing job in world building, and has such deep and personal characters each with their own complex history. While it is a children’s show, there are many lessons that can be learned from the themes throughout the program. My favorite character is a gem named ‘Peridot’, as she undergoes deep character development and questions everything she knows and everything she ‘should’ be. I’m re-watching this show now for about the 3rd time, and each time I understand it more and more.

Scent - Coffee: my mom recently gifted me a coffee-scented candle, and I must say It has helped me greatly in staying focused. Maybe it’s because it reminds me of a coffee shop where I study and get work done, or maybe because it encourages me to finish so I can get another cup of coffee. Coffee has been my favorite scent this month, but nothing will top my all-time favorite: lavender.

Book - ‘The Second Nature of Indigo’ by Aubin Elise: I have a degree of dyslexia, so reading can sometimes become very frustrating and take long periods of time, pushing me away from reading books. However, when my wonderful, talented, and kind friend I met years ago in Driver’s Ed published a mystery novel, I knew I had to read it. I find her process fascinating, and I can see all the years of work that have gone into creating her book - I LOVE learning, seeing, and experiencing ‘the process’. I am so happy (and proud) to say although it’s taken me a couple months, I am now on Chapter 6 of this wonderful book, and cannot wait to see where it takes me! I am already so hooked, and I am excited to see how the story evolves. Thank you Aubin for sharing your beautiful work to the world. Here is a link to her website with more information on her book, as well as the author herself! https://aubinelise.com/

Choreographer - Emiliano Jimenez: CLI Conservatory alumni, Emiliano is pushing the boundary between modern art and dance. His pieces of work are so unique to his mind, and it is captivating to think of his process. His vocabulary for dance is so vast, and it is pure magic to see it being used so precisely. Here are a couple Instagram links to different pieces:

‘Base.’ - https://www.instagram.com/p/CbVj_CHjJD4/
‘abcdEfg’ - https://www.instagram.com/p/Cn8BzwLj3oO/

Mind = Blown

All Time Favorite thing this month: I have been so, so, so obsessed with the Ocean. Most of my artistic inspiration from this month has been drawn from the Ocean, and I have learned many lessons in letting go but not forgetting. From the tides to the deep sea creatures, my heart has resonated with the water. I recently made a day trip to an Aquarium and beach with my boyfriend, and as we walked on the sand and heard the subtle waves crash, my heart felt so full. There’s a healing property to the Ocean, and all it has to offer. I’m beyond thankful to live on this planet with our waters, and the life it inhabits. Here are some ‘sub’ favorites relating to our Oceans:

Movie - Children Of The Sea: girl this movie will mess you up… in the best way. Not only is it visually stunning, but the story of purpose is one I’m still processing. There are many words spoken in that film that I am still dissecting, but I know resonate. I highly suggest watching this movie at some point - I also suggest watching with an open mind, with no expectations. It is stunning, existential, beautiful, and crazy.

Animal - Female Fanfin Sea Devil: I was watching a deep-sea documentary with my Mom one day, and this strange, powerful, and intricate animal was highlighted. How is it that these rare animals exist on this Earth? The Biology and Anatomy of this Fish astounds me. And, her movements inspire me. Here are a couple links to Youtube videos exploring the Female Fanfin Sea Devil!

https://www.youtube.com/shorts/zBHMRl0Xjd4

https://youtu.be/QqAPGWLvpmY

The Facts - Check out this video to fully understand how deep and vast our oceans are… INCREDIBLE!!

https://youtu.be/GE-lAftuQgc

These are my favorites from this month! Thank you for reading, and thank you for your ongoing love and support! I cannot wait to share my favorites from the upcoming months! :)

Self Care And The Creative Mind

Self care is something I find essential in my life. I know, that sounds cheesy and obvious, but it has really assisted in the growth of who I am, as a person and as an artist. Self care can look many ways; from a shower, watching a movie, journaling, spending time with friends, or taking a nap, self care is making intentional choices to give back to your heart and mind. And what your heart and mind will need will most likely change every day - self care is also self-awareness, and is a practice I use to listen, and be patient with myself.

Valuing self care has deepened my relationship to myself - I am able to recognize more easily how I feel, and what I could do to help me work through those feelings. They can be feelings of sadness, anxiety, and anger, or happiness, joy, and celebration. Being able to take care of myself and know I have healthy ways to cope with however I feel makes being vulnerable and open much easier. I know I’m there for myself, and I’ll be okay.

Music and songwriting is a form of self care, not only in listening or reading it, but in writing and creating as well. I typically turn to songwriting and creating music for self care when I am in a heavy space - I feel like it allows me to experience, and helps me sort out how to identify what I feel. From paying attention to what chords I use to the tone of my voice, creating music is a raw, authentic experience, and there is so much being communicated. Figuring out lyrics that feel right, or that I relate to pushes me to ask myself many questions - questions with answers that help me understand how I feel, why I feel, and what I feel. The process of creation is self care in itself.

Recently, I’ve found self care in being outside and going on adventures, sleep, makeup artistry, journaling, writing letters, and spending time with my loved ones.

What does your heart need today?

The Synesthetic Process Behind Each Song

As some of you may or may not know, I experience a neurological condition known as ‘Synesthesia’. In short, it is a condition in which your brain associates colors to sounds, days of the week to colors, numbers to textures, and much more. With Synesthesia, something is always linked to something else. In this post, I would like to share how Synesthesia assists me in creating music!

The process for writing a song is different each time - different songs call for different things. Some need to be journaled, some need to be written in pen, and others need to be typed; however, Synesthesia is a part of the process that is the same across the board. Inspiration can come from anywhere - a friend’s voice, a picture, a feeling, the ocean, a word… and after I have that inspiration and build a concept onto it, words, colors, shapes and textures flood my mind. Here is an example of one way I write music that really highlights Synesthesia;

Once I have maybe a line or two written for the concept, let’s say for this example it’s ‘heavily gold drapes over your eyes’ I’ll start lists of words that pull me into that world, and have similar tastes, colors, textures and sounds;

‘Heavily gold drapes over your eyes’

Sun
Brush
Skin
Hollow
Hands
Holding
Breathing
For you
Hear me
Over

Once I have a building list, I’ll use the words I wrote for inspiration, and to connect and continue a story.

Another example of where Synesthesia comes into play is recording and listening in the studio. There have been many times I've tried to explain how certain instruments or vocals should sound with words like ‘the light on a lighthouse’, ‘darker’, or ‘more blue’. Thankfully, my producer, Kevin McNoldy sees the beauty in those types of connections, and works with me to get it exactly where it needs to be. While the Synesthetic process opens many doors, it can also lead to feeling overwhelmed by how big the playground really is. It can be frustrating trying to write a song that fits all of those categories of connection, and having it feel just right. I’m a perfectionist by nature, however, with the added trait of Synesthesia, if something isn’t 100% right, it feels so painfully obvious. This can make the writing process last longer, and make recording difficult at times.

Although it has its pros and cons, I would never change my Synesthetic understanding of life. I’m so happy to have been able to share this part of me with you all, and maybe help you understand more and more about this condition! Thank you for your continuing love and support.

(If you’re interested in an in-depth explanation/exploration of Synesthesia, here is a link to an MLA essay I wrote titled “Understanding Synesthesia”!)

CC&CO Dance Complex at Adrenaline 2023

Hello! In this blog post, I wanted to share a big part of my dance world that happened… This past weekend my dance studio attended Adrenaline as our first competition of the season, and the class of 2023’s last first dance competition. I feel so fortunate to be a part of the 2023 class at CC&CO Dance Complex, and I wanted to share a bit about the process of this piece.

It is tradition at CC&CO that the graduating seniors choreograph a piece dedicated to their time at the studio, and are given the opportunity to perform it. The creation of this piece was fun, surreal, and emotional, and was filled with love. I remember to begin, we sat down at a coffee shop and began to brainstorm songs that felt right. There were many suggestions, however, we landed on ‘There Will Be Time’ by Mumford & Sons - we felt it best captured all that a ‘class of’ dance is. Once we had our song, we began the choreography process. We wrote down time marks from where we needed to cut the music, which sections would be where, who has what counts, and how it would all come together. This process went by fairly quickly, as we had a clear vision of what we wanted, so after the planning, we came up with some moves. This part of the process either went by fast when we were all focused, or was trailing along when we couldn’t stop making jokes or funny suggestions. Eventually, we finished the choreography, and then we cleaned and selected costumes. Before we knew it, our last first dance competition was here. There was a lot of emotion going into this competition from a lot of different angles, however, there was also an overall feeling of love, connection, and joy. Even in the tears, we came together and supported one another. I remember waiting in the wings for our music start, and hearing our CC&CO family screaming and cheering. I couldn’t help but cry. This piece not only signifies our last first, but honors all that we have done up until our last competition season. As we performed, there were a good amount of ‘mistakes’ made, but it really did not matter - what mattered was that we were there together, dancing together. I cannot explain the joy, pride, and love I felt for the class of 2023 in that moment. We have cried together, celebrated together, supported each other, and loved each other - we really are a family.

None of this would have been possible without our CC&CO family - from parents, peers, to teachers, thank you. Thank you.

Attached is a video of ‘Class of 2023’, and I hope you enjoy watching as much as we enjoyed performing. We still have 3 competitions left, so be on the lookout for more dance related content coming out over the next couple months! Thank you all for your love and support.

Kira's 18th birthday tattoo!

Hello everyone! Thank you for your ongoing love and support, and all of the kind words in response to my latest song, ‘The Heart of Us’!

For this blog post, I wanted to share a story from my 18th birthday….

Ever since I was 12, I knew when I turned 18 I wanted to get a tattoo of my last name, ‘Takei’ written in Japanese. It is a tattoo my father, as well as his two siblings all have, and it’s known in my family as the ‘Takei symbol’; a recognition of our heritage, and a connection to each other through respect and honor. Over the course of my life, I’ve had a very conflicting relationship with my heritage, and what I chose to identify as. Growing up, recognition of my Japanese roots were always discussed and cherished - family is a very prevalent theme in my life, and with that, my family’s history. From watching Studio Ghibli movies with my Grandparents when we were little, to hearing my Grandfather’s stories about experiencing Pearl Harbor, being Asian is something I have been taught to learn about, and take pride in. However, as I have grown up, the question of “am I Asian enough?” has clouded my mind. “Am I Asian enough to identify with the Asian race?”, “because I’m definitely white passing, is it offensive to non-white passing individuals to identify as Asian?” - these trails of thoughts lead me to a confusing space with my identity. Of course, I am mainly white and I would never claim to only be Japanese, but am I allowed to cherish this side of me? Am I Asian enough to recognize it as a part of me, even though it has always been recognized and celebrated throughout my life?

While I still don’t know the answer to some of these questions, I do know that being a quarter Japanese is a part of me I can never change, and is a part of me I would never want to change. My tattoo will live on my body forever, and serves as a reminder that regardless of societal judgment, I am a Takei, and I am a part of my beautiful Asian-American family.

And that’s the story behind my tattoo. (No, it didn’t hurt, no, I don’t regret it, and yes, I love love love it.)

Thank you all for reading this blog post, and be sure to subscribe to my newsletter for more content, website updates, and more! From concept to release, the experience of creating a song is unique and specific to what that song calls for. In light of Kira’s most recent release, ‘The Heart of Us’, she decided to share a bit about her process for this song…

When thinking about concepts for a song, one would assume a love song is the easiest to write - and while that may be true for some, I always find myself gravitating to write more existential, and serious lyrics. After giving it some thought, I think I know why; an authentic love song is one of the most personal, real, and honest forms of showing affection - in a love song, the artist is straight up allowing someone to exist in their precious form of expression. For me, writing music is sacred, and as time passes I’m learning more and more about what I want to write about, and how that affects my artistry. In my now over one year long relationship, I have learned more than I can explain about holding space, patience, and understanding. I recognize this human has been so kind, loving, and supportive to me, and I came to realize I genuinely do trust them to treat my art the same. So, the writing process began.

Visuals, colors, feelings, tastes, and sounds bounced around in my head, forming lyrics that I felt best capture the beauty of my partner, and the love we share. The writing process took about 3 months - I wanted to be sure everything was just right, and felt authentic. When the writing was completed, I worked with my producer, Kevin McNoldy, to create the beautiful sound that is ‘The Heart of Us’. We worked through the smallest of details, recorded SO many vocal tracks, and listened to what the song was calling for. Working with Kevin feels like a growing light being bounced back and forth, with many “what if we tried...” and “would it be possible to…”. This creates the atmosphere of a creative playground, and it is one of my favorite places to play. For the cover art, I knew I wanted a picture relating to nature - my partner reminds me of the grounding, soothing energy of trees and fresh air, so I selected an image I took in Yosemite National Park in 2019. I loved this picture the second I took it, and knew I wanted to use it for a special project like ‘The Heart of Us’.

On Christmas, I wrapped my Airpods, and gave them to my partner - I had him put them in his ears, and I played the song. I was nervous to see his reaction, however, it was better than I could have hoped. He was moved to tears, and was left speechless for a few minutes after the song was finished. Seeing how moved he was felt like a gift to me, and was reassurance I trusted the right person with this song. I set the release date to January 14th, our one year anniversary.

And that’s the story of my latest release, ‘The Heart of Us’. I couldn’t have created this song without my producer, Kevin McNoldy, or my partner. Thank you.

Thank you all so much for the love you have shown for ‘The Heart of Us’, and be sure to stay tuned for more projects on the way! :)

The Heart Of Us launch!

Kira's third single, The Heart Of Us, is out now!
